KARA Pickard loves living in Eastwood with her partner Jessica Jackson because it’s a neighbourhood where they won’t get a “second look” just because they’re gay. A desire to live close to city hot spots, restaurants and work are the reasons why the pair decided to call the tiny, city-fringe suburb sandwiched between Adelaide and Parkside home.
“Adelaide’s a little bit more behind than any other state (but) I feel comfortable walking down the streets of Parkside, Eastwood and Unley with her (Jessica),” Ms Pickard, 22, said. Her sentiments echo a growing trend of same-sex couples who are also choosing to live in inner-city suburbs surrounding the CBD.
Data obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals Adelaide, Prospect and North Adelaide are the top three neighbourhoods where same-sex couples live in state. Mount Gambier, Norwood, Morphett Vale, Parkside, Largs Bay, Mile End and Goodwood round out the top ten.
