Economic recovery in Oregon is like spring: It arrives more slowly than you would like. But as the first quarter of the year comes to an end Saturday, a few economic blooms provide hope sunnier days are ahead.
Daimler Trucks’ announcement this week that it is hiring 30 professionals and managers at its North American headquarters in Portland is one such bloom. It’s the latest sign that important Oregon manufacturing employers are rebounding from the recession. Daimler already had made 200 hires in Portland this year, and Oregon economic mainstays Intel and Precision Castparts also are growing.
The housing market shows its own signs of a gradual thaw. Portland-area home sales climbed 17.5 percent in February over a year earlier, though a large inventory of foreclosed homes continues to hold down prices. Building permits are increasing, too.
