Taos County’s economy was 5 percent lower in 2011 compared to 2010, according to gross receipt numbers recently released by the state. The numbers are included in the most recent Taos Economic Report, which compiles economic data for Taos County on a quarterly and annual basis.
In the fourth quarter of 2011 alone (October through December), the total reported gross receipts were 10 percent lower than in the same quarter last year.
It is probably not surprising that the hardest hit industry continues to be construction. The industry sub-category called “building, developing and general contracting” fell 64 percent in the fourth quarter between 2010 and 2011. Much of that loss can likely be attributed to tens of millions of dollars spent on government-funded projects that began winding down in 2011.
