New York: Sullivan County Becoming Very Gay Friendly

The most powerful elected official in Sullivan County is gay. So are the heads of its public radio station, its nationally renowned theater company and the former chief of its Democratic Party. Sullivan has become such a welcoming place for gay folks that it was named one of the country’s “cool gay getaways” by the leading gay travel magazine, Passport.

And, of course, Sullivan isn’t the only gay-friendly spot in our region.

Years before the state legalized same-sex marriage, New Paltz Mayor Jason West helped scores of gay couples tie the knot in Ulster County, which counts among its many gay residents one of the first and highest-ranking openly gay presidential appointees, former Clinton administration Deputy Secretary of Labor Ginny Apuzzo. Apuzzo is also the founder of the Hudson Valley LGTBTQ Community Center in Kingston.
