More Mid Michigan Houses Sitting Empty

Michigan Real EstateA new wave of Census data released Wednesday confirmed what most mid-Michigan residents already knew just from taking a walk in their neighborhoods. There are more empty houses than 10 years ago.

New Census housing data show an across-the-map spike in the number of vacant homes and apartments in the tri-county area with the percentage of empty housing units more than doubling in some communities in the past decade.

“I’m not surprised,” said Bob Hubbell, CEO of Coldwell Banker Hubbell Briarwood, one of the area’s leading real estate firms. “The economy has really hit the skids here. Right now we’re looking at an eight-month surplus in inventory on the market.”
