Dale Zahn, CEO of the West Michigan Lakeshore Association of Realtors, watched the recent debate in Holland over adding sexual orientation to the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance, but he knew it would have little effect on his members.
As an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors, all his members must adhere to the NAR’s code of ethics, which as of Jan. 1 prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. So Realtors working in the city of Holland already adhere to that code, even though the Holland City Council did not approve adding sexual orientation to its ordinance.
“Regardless of what Holland did, a Realtor cannot violate the code and ignore it,” said Zahn, whose organization has about 800 members, mostly in Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties. “Realtors have to live under this code regardless of that local ordinance. The code prevails.”
