Maui is the new destination locale for Gay Pride Celebration. This year was the first year in many where there was actually Pride festival beginning Oct. 5th with a VIP reception at the Sunseeker Hotel. On Saturday, Oct 6th there was a full day of events starting with a Hawaiian Cultural Hike with hugely discounted pricing to be able to walk on these private lands with a guided tour. The festival itself was from 10-4 with booths and vendors selling jewelry, funs stuff for your pets, food, services and much more. There plenty of food and drink on hand and entertainment all day long. This is a family friendly event and there were face painting artists and bounce house for the kids. In addition, there was a fun “drag” race, and a parade of pooches from the Maui SPCA. All of this was at the wonderful Maui Tropical Plantation.
After the day festivities Maui Pride continued into the evening with a lovely Buffet Dinner at the Maui Tropical Plantation Banquet Room. The food was great and tropically themed. During dinner a Hawaiian Dance Show was presented that was fantastic. I was quite impressed with the dancers and the caliber of the show. I have been to many a luau and can say this was a great presentation.
After dinner, Deborah Vial and her band, a local recording artist treated us all to a live show and following the DJ did his thing for dancing the remainder of the night.
The following day on Sunday was Maui Pride’s wrap up and goodbyes until next year with a breakfast at Stella Blues. There was quite a good turn out for breakfast as well.
Maui Pride has already started planning events throughout the coming year with something occurring every month. So if you can’t make it in October, you can come during one of the other fundraising events and meet your Maui gay folk. There are events like Breakfast at Gannons, the Amazing Race, Little Beach and Big Toys, Glow Party and Dance, Lava Soiree and many other events that you could plan a trip to Maui around.
For more info, checkout the Maui Pride site: www.MauiPride.org or check out this link about their wrap up of the event which will also lead you to their site as well. http://mauipride.org/2012/10/pride-2012-wrap-up/. Maui Pride provides scholarships to students who are either LGBT or have parents that are so there is always a fundraising event every month to be able to provide those scholarships.
The expectation is that Maui Pride Celebration is going to get bigger and better every year, as this first year was a huge success. Hopefully, we will see you next October to celebrate with us! AND if you are looking to buy a property on Maui, I can show you a few things while you are here.
