Is Long Beach’s Gayborhood Shifting to Pine Avenue?

Hamburger Mary'sWith 12 franchised restaurants currently operating in cities from West Hollywood to Berlin, Hamburger Mary’s is without a doubt the international pioneer in ground beef/drag queen fusion concept dining. And now Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach has set its sights on new horizons, surprising fans with a recently announced move from its current location on Alamitos Avenue and Broadway to the former Backstage space at 330 Pine Avenue–expected to take place sometime in 2014…

According to owner Dale Warner, patrons can expect the new 7,000-square-foot Pine Avenue location to be a bigger, better and more beautiful version of the current restaurant, bar and performance space, with onsite parking for customers as well as the added enhancement of Pine Avenue’s first parklets…

To some, the news of the move comes as a surprise, as it takes the LGBT-focused business out of the Broadway strip known as the Long Beach ‘gayborhood’ to the more mixed environs of downtown. Long Beach habitue Scott Williams expressed mild surprise that the venue would take roots in the more tourist-driven area. Warner, however sees Downtown Long Beach as the perfect place to cater to his many customers who live or work in the vicinity, as well as to mark a strong and visible LGBT presence in the fast-growing Pine Avenue strip.
