Gayborhood Pizzerias Close, Open

PizzaA common theme in today’s stories. First off, a venerated pizza shop in Boystown in Chicago is closing.

GoPride reports:

Pie Hole’s Boystown location at 3477 N. Broadway will close on June 29, following the Chicago Pride Parade, a month of Pride festivities and more than ten years in the neighborhood. “Like so many small businesses, we suffered through a horrible winter season,” said owner Doug Brandt in an email statement sent to on Monday. “Our bootstrap budget couldn’t fight all the high costs of food and supplies, and utilities and employment… and allow us to provide the kind of service and quality the people expect and deserve these days.”

Meanwhile, a new pizza shop is coming into Hillcrest, San Diego’s gayborhood.

LGBT Weekly reports:

East Coast Pizza (ECP), famous for New York-style pizza but without the attitude, are set to open their third Southern California location this summer right here in Hillcrest. Started by a young, savvy entrepreneur with a deep desire to bring New York’s beloved large-slice pizza to the Southern California masses, ECP is bona fide New York-style hand-tossed pizza, by the slice or by the pie, known for its authentic taste and signature flavor. And, come mid-July, ECP will bring its award-winning pizza pies to San Diego’s Uptown community with the opening of East Coast Pizza Hillcrest.
