Michigan is comprised of two peninsulas - the Lower Peninsula (often called The Mitten) and the UP, or Upper Peninsula, separated from each other by Lake Michigan. Michigan has almost 10 million residents, most of whom live in the Lower Peninsula.

Lansing is the capital of Michigan, in the south-central part of the state. Lansing is a governmental center, and also has a strong medical component, with a number go medical, vetrinary and nursing schools. Lansing is the center of gay life in Michigan, with lots of gay nightlife and its own Pride celebration.

Detroit is the largest city and metro area in Michigan, a port city on the Detroit River long known as the world's automotive center and the birthplace of the Motown Sound. Detroit has almost a million rsidents, with close to 4.5 million in the greater Denver area. Detroit has been hard it by problems in the auto industry, with huge unemployment numbers; as the economy starts to recover and automakers' fortunes improve, so too will Detroit start to see improvement. Detroit's gay bars are found mostly on the city's north and west sides.
