Louisiana is soaked in the unique Creole culture - a blend of French, Spanish, and African influences, and is the only us state with Parishes instead of counties. With a population of about 4 and a half million, Louisiana is divided into two parts geographically - the hilly uplands in the north, and the lower alluvial region of swamps, beaches, and coastal marshlands. Louisiana has a hot and humid subtropical climate, reaching the low nineties in the summertime in the south and over 100 degrees in the north.

Baton Rouge is the state capital, and also the state's second largest city. with 3/4's of a million people in the Baton Rouge Metro Area. Faced with an influx of residents after Hurricane Katrina, Baton Roughe has become more liberal, with revitalized economic growth. Baton Rouge has a few gay and lesbian clubs now, an annual Pride festival, and a mixed LGBT social scene.

The largest city in the state is New Orleans, at the mouth of the Mississippi River, long a center for great music and exotic culture. Most of the damage from Hurricane Katrina has been repaired, and the levees are being strengthened, though it may take some time for the Big Easy to return to her former glory. Still, New Orleans is a national treasure, and is very gay friendly. The New Orleans region has over 1.25 million residents, and in the city itself the population has swelled from an estimated 223K after Katrina to over 330K today. Most of New Orlean's gay bars and businesses are in the historic French Quarter near Bourbon Street, and the city hosts two major gay friendly events - Mardi Gras and the mostly gay Southern Decadence over Labor Day Weekend.

If you love that southern drawl and the sweet taste of crawdads and gumbo, Louisiana could be your perfect place.

At Gay Realty Network, we know from experience how important having gay or gay friendly real estate agent can be, especially when it's time to make an offer and fill out a contract. Having an agent that knows the difference between having joint tenancy or holding a property as tenants in common, who understands gay/lesbian families and our own unique real estate needs and challenges, and who can help you find the gay friendly neighborhoods in your area where you and your friends and family will feel comfortable is invaluable.
