The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and the only island that's still Volcanically active.
There's not a large gay and lesbian community on the Big Island, but there are gay and lesbian folks everywhere.
The Island's west shore is one of the most exotic places you'll find anywhere - it's very dry and covered with the broken remnants of ancient lava flows.
Kailua-Kona, on the west shore, is the most touristy of the island towns, with great shopping, restairants and bars - the place to see and be seen on the island. If you're looking for something a bit more quiet, Kailua-Kona is surrounded by beautiful suburbs.
Just south of Kailua-Kona, Captsin Cook has a more laid-back vibe, with large homes and fantastic ocean views.
The center of the Big Island is where you'll find Volcanoes National Park, home to the state's active volcanoes and some magnificent craters, steam vents, and even a lava tube you can explore.
You'll also find Volcano, a charming village set in a tropical rainforest. If you're looking to get away from the summer heat, Volcano's high enough that it actually frequently gets cold. It's a much different lifestyle than the West Shore - there's just a small market in town, and for shopping you'll have to head down the hill to Hilo.
Looking for Hawaiian tropics? Check out Hilo and the Puna District - a lowland peninsula with jungle to spare.
Try bohemian Hilo, right on the water, with its famous Farmer's Market where you can find everything from fruits and vegetables to flowers to Hawaiian clothing.
Or Pahoa, a sleepy plantation village inland, where you'll find houses n huge tropical lots.
And on the Western tip of the Puna District, you can watch the lava flowing into the sea, as steam billows up into the sky.
